I began collecting lacquer ware quite recently. These pieces consists of Burmese, Thai and Vietnamese. I went crazy during my last trip to Ho Chi Minh City, they have amazing lacquer wares. The ones made for the European market are of more superior quality, they have beautiful finishings.
My collection mostly comes in red and a few in black, ranging from trays, boxes, table wares etc. The red collection currently are kept in the Chinese cabinet. Having the rest displayed. What I normally do is I edit my pieces instead of displaying everything at one time, to avoid too much clutter.Among my black lacquerware collection is this Hun Sok, it's actually a tray used to serve the monks, but it's now fashionable as a lamp base...
The Burmese lacquer some have hand painted designs on them, the tit bit trays with compartments are used for serving cookies and cakes comes Hari Raya. I have one particular Vietnamese laquer box with silver finishing...
Some of them have more shiny finshing some are matt. There's this set among my collection comes with a dragonfly motifs...
They can be very delicate meaning lugging them back is quite risky, that's one of the reasons why they can cost a lot once they leave the country of origin out onto the market overseas...
